High grade Silvering Powder

Made in the traditional way in our own workshop.

This is, without doubt, the best on the market.

Concentrated and not ‘bulked’ out with excess salt.

Our mixture is a fine, dry, powder.

Professional pack (500cc)                 £34 – 00

Silver finishing powder          £2 – 50 per 100cc

Guide to using Silvering Powder

1/  Thoroughly clean the dial, removing the old surface lacquer, silvering & tarnishing by wet-and-dry paper under gently running water. Take care not to deeply score the dial by using too coarse a grade paper or over polishing by too fine. A continuous circular motion around the dial of an even pressure is best to produce the silky finish required. Never overwork this as you must not get to the point where you are removing the brass underneath the old lacquer or rounding the crispness of the engraving. Keep the dial wet and proceed straight to the next stage.

If wax replacement is required: - Thoroughly dry the dial by plunging into very hot (hand hot water) for a couple of minutes before removing & quickly drying with very dry tea-towels. The hot water process aids rapid drying. Professionally wax as usual. Repeat the process above (enough just to remove unwanted wax only) then proceed to the second stage below:-

2/  Have the required amount of  silver on a saucer ( roughly 2 or more teaspoons) keeping the storage container dry & out of direct sun. Charge a piece of clean damp cotton rag with the Silvering Powder and rub into the surface with a circular movement, adding more powder, working quickly until an even silver effect is achieved. (Should the dial become too dry  - add a little more water during the process). Rinse the dial under warm water. Proceed straight to stage 3/  - DO NOT LEAVE THE DAIL COLD & WET ONCE THE SILVER IS ADDED.

3/  Charge a clean cotton rag or wad with a generous amount of Finishing Powder. Go over the whole surface until a fine , even silver finish has been achieved. Rinse in very hot water (as hot as you can bear) to aid rapid drying. Quickly dry with at least two very dry tea-towels (changing each one as it becomes damp) then air dry for awhile on a radiator or sunny window sill (do not be tempted to ‘cook’ the dial in the oven or with a hot hair dryer) DO NOT TOUCH THE DIAL SURFACE.

4/ It is not uncommon for the odd brown streak to appear (the air-drying is to give it time for these to appear before lacquering/waxing). This is due to fine pitting or some other way unseen moisture has remained on the dial – just the tiniest amount of moisture will cause this. To remove the ‘browning’ simply rub dry finishing powder on with dry cotton wool over the dial. Then rub off the access with a generous clean wad of cotton wool to prevent bare hands touching the surface. Don’t worry if there still appears to be a ‘white-bloom’ on the wax numerals or dial (it will disappear once lacquered). Professionally lacquer (or top quality wax if preferred) the dial as usual.

Tungsten Carbide Drills

These drills are invaluable to the clockmaker. They allow drilling into  hard steel such as arbours without having to let down the temper - making such jobs as re-pivotting a fairly simple task.
